From Eiffel Tower QR codes to Dubai Duty Free, India's payment rail is quietly going global one bilateral deal at a time.
UPI Now Works in Nine Countries — Here's Where
UPI is now live for real transactions in nine countries, from Singapore to Cambodia. Here's the actual coverage, what's next, and why NPCI's own timeline says this will take decades.
For most of its life, UPI was a very India story. That's changing, slowly and one country at a time.
Where it actually works today
As of mid-2026, UPI is live for real transactions in Singapore, the UAE, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, France, Qatar, and Greece — with Cambodia joining as the ninth country in June 2026, through a partnership between NPCI International and ACLEDA Bank using Cambodia's own KHQR system. The depth of coverage varies wildly: in the UAE, the tie-up with Mashreq Bank's NeoPay and the AANI system now reaches more than 60,000 merchant locations, including Dubai Duty Free and Lulu Hypermarket. In France, it's narrower but more symbolic — Indian tourists can scan a UPI QR code at the Eiffel Tower, in major museums, and at Galeries Lafayette.
What's next in the pipeline
Cyprus, Oman, and Japan reportedly have MoUs signed but aren't live yet. Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand are still described as "under exploration" for bilateral linkages, alongside Israel and the Maldives.
The honest timeline
Here's the part that doesn't make it into most headlines: NPCI International's own internal estimate is that building out its full global network of bilateral payment "pipes" could take 20 to 25 years, and only seven or eight are actually operational as of mid-2026. Each new country isn't a software update — it's a fresh regulatory negotiation, a local banking partner, and a merchant-acquisition effort from scratch.
Why it matters
UPI's domestic scale (hundreds of millions of users, tens of billions of monthly transactions) doesn't automatically translate abroad — every new country is closer to a cold start than an expansion. The countries going live first tend to have two things in common: a large Indian diaspora or tourist flow, and a local bank willing to build the bridge. Watch those two signals, not the total-country-count headline, to gauge where UPI actually shows up next.

Frequently asked questions
In a growing number of places, yes — UPI works at live merchant locations in Singapore, UAE, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, France, Qatar, Greece, and as of June 2026, Cambodia. Coverage varies a lot by country, from a handful of tourist landmarks to tens of thousands of merchants.
Each country requires a separate bilateral agreement, a local banking or payment-network partner, and regulatory sign-off — NPCI International's own timeline suggests the full rollout could take two decades. It's less a technology problem than a country-by-country negotiation problem.
