Six categories account for most of what people are actually installing on their phones in 2026. Here's the breakdown, by share of total installs across Android and iOS.

01Gaming — 32%

Still the single largest category by install share. Top apps in this category span casual and competitive titles alike, reflecting gaming's position as the most reliably high-volume install category year after year.

02Social Media — 28%

Instagram, WhatsApp, and Telegram anchor this category. Social media's install share has stayed remarkably stable even as attention has fragmented across more app categories — it remains close behind Gaming despite years of "peak social" predictions.

03AI & Productivity — 26%

The standout mover. ChatGPT, Notion, and Canva lead a category that's climbed to within two points of Social Media — a category that barely existed at meaningful scale a few years ago now sits third overall. This tracks with the broader AI adoption data: ChatGPT alone reached 1 billion monthly active users faster than any app in history.

04Shopping — 24%

Amazon, Flipkart, and Meesho lead install share here, reflecting continued strength in e-commerce app adoption, particularly across price-conscious and value-retail segments.

05Finance — 22%

PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm top this category — a reflection of how deeply UPI-based payment apps have embedded themselves into daily install behavior, consistent with UPI's FY26 transaction data showing over 55 crore registered users.

06Health & Fitness — 18%

The smallest of the six tracked categories, though still a meaningful share of total installs — this category tends to see stronger seasonal spikes (New Year, post-holiday periods) than the others.

The headline isn't Gaming's continued lead — it's how close AI & Productivity has climbed to Social Media in just a few years, a faster ascent than any of the other five categories have managed historically.
